Snakes & Lizards Care Guide
At Snakes and Lizards, the health and welfare of our animals is our highest priority. All of our breeding animals are regularly health checked and receive veterinary care through The Unusual Pet Vets, Karingal. To help your new reptile thrive, please follow these basic care guidelines.
Before Bringing Your Reptile Home
✅ Ensure your enclosure is fully set up and tested before your reptile arrives.
✅ Check that heating, lighting, and thermostats are working correctly.
✅ Provide secure hides and fresh water.
✅ Research the specific requirements of your species.
Snake Care
Housing
- Use a secure enclosure with a lockable lid or doors.
- Provide at least two hides, one on the warm side and one on the cool side.
- Include branches, logs, or décor for enrichment where appropriate.
Heating
- Snakes require a temperature gradient to regulate their body temperature.
- Warm side: species-dependent (follow species-specific care requirements).
- Cool side: allow a cooler area for the snake to retreat.
- Always use a thermostat with heating equipment.
Water
- Fresh drinking water should be available at all times.
- Clean and refill water bowls regularly.
Feeding
- Feed appropriately sized frozen-thawed rodents.
- Never leave live prey unattended with your snake.
- Allow your snake to digest undisturbed for 48 hours after feeding.
Handling
- Allow your snake to settle in for at least 5–7 days after arriving home.
- Handle gently and confidently.
- Avoid handling during shedding or immediately after feeding.
Lizard Care
Housing
- Provide an enclosure suitable for your species' adult size.
- Include hides, climbing branches, rocks, and enrichment items.
- Spot-clean regularly.
Heating & Lighting
- Most lizards require:
- A basking area
- Ambient daytime heat
- Appropriate UVB lighting
- Replace UVB globes according to manufacturer recommendations.
Water
- Fresh water should always be available.
- Some species benefit from misting to maintain humidity.
Diet
- Diet varies by species.
- Feed appropriate insects, vegetables, fruits, or prepared diets as recommended.
- Dust food with calcium and vitamin supplements when required.
Shedding
- Ensure humidity requirements are met.
- Never forcibly remove stuck shed.
- Seek veterinary advice if shedding problems persist.
Health Checks
Watch for signs of illness:
- Refusing food for extended periods
- Weight loss
- Wheezing or clicking sounds
- Discharge from the nose or mouth
- Swelling or lumps
- Difficulty shedding
- Unusual lethargy
If you notice any of these signs, contact an experienced reptile veterinarian as soon as possible.
